 HERBERT BIGGAR (abt.1560) of BARBOY 

The first ascertainable member of the Kirkcudbrightshire family. On 10th March 1614, John, Archbishop of Glasgow, received from the Crown confirmation charter of certain lands in the Barony of Bishop Forest, Parish of Kirkpatrick-Irongray, Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, among them being the lands of Captainton,

Herbert Biggar of Barboy (1560?- aft. 1638) appears as the first ascertainable member of the Kirkcudbrightshire family following the family's displacement as a result of the persecution of the early 1600s. 

Herbert Biggar received on March 10, 1614, a grant of land from the Crown through the Archbishop of Glasgow, including the Barony of Bishop Forest, Parish of Kirkpatrick-Irongray, Stewartry of Kirkcudbrightshire.  Further on November 7, 1627, he received the lands of Barboy, as heir and assignee of William Morane (Moring). 

 

Herbert Biggar was married to Janet McKinney descendent of the Captainton Family, and that with her the portion of the Barbuie property came to the Biggars.

She died in August 1637, having made her will on July 15, 1636, nominating her husband executor for her children: Herbert (died 1676), James, William (1642-1682), owner of Margolly, and Grissel, a daughter.

1.  HERBERT BIGGAR I was born Bet. 1560 - 1580 in Of Barbouie, and died Aft. 1638 in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.  He married JANET M'KINNAY.  She was born in Captainton Glen, Dumfries and Galloway, and died August 1637.

2.  HERBERT2 BIGGAR II (HERBERT1) was born December 28, 1600, in Barbowie, Scotland, and died March 25, 1675.  He married JANET MAXWELL of Baltersan on August 06, 1638, daughter of JAMES MAXWELL.  She was born July 22, 1617, in Baltersan, Holywood, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, and died September 30, 1698.

9.              ix.    JAMES BIGGAR, b. Abt. 1657, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland; d. Upper Dalgleish,  Ettrick, Selkirk, Scotland.

All fled to escape persecution. Their cousin James Biggar of Marglolly was also a Covenanter, probably at Rullion Green [1666] with Herbert.

3.  WILLIAM2 BIGGAR (HERBERT1) was born in 1612 in Margolly, Kirkcudbright, Scotland, and died in 1682.

5.  HARBERT3 BIGGAR III (HERBERT2, HERBERT1) was born 1640 in of Barbuie, and died December 30, 1709.  He married JEAN CANNAN on November 01, 1676, in Dumfriesshire, Scotland.  She was born in Barley, Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbright Scotland, and died in 1700 in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.

 Served heir to father, 20th December 1698. Will, 24th November 1698 (Barbuie Papers) Herbert Biggar III is listed as Harbert Biggar, portioned of Barbuie.  Has assignee of the lands of Boreland, Barclay, Laggan, and Marbruie,  in the list of Inheritors of Irongray, May 5, 1666.

 

Herbert Biggar was a Covenanter,  his arrest was ordered, 9th May 1668, because he had not availed himself of the Indemnity Act (Reg. Privy Council, 9tl1 May 1668).

8.  JOAN3 BIGGAR (HERBERT2, HERBERT1) was born in 1648.  She met JOHN MAXWELL.  He was born in Middlebie, Scotland.

9.  JAMES3 BIGGAR (HERBERT2, HERBERT1) was born Abt. 1657 in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, and died in Upper Dalgleish,  Ettrick, Selkirk, Scotland.

 

Notes for JAMES BIGGAR:  He is listed as having descendants in Ettrick, Boston, and New York, USA.  Alive in 1709-1716. 

Will of his father and sister Joan states that “ James and William went to the Parish of Etterick during the violent persecution which happened in Scotland about this time.” Thomas Boston of Ettrick, the noted theologian, and author of states both James & William who were both elders in Ettrick Church: “ The families in whom was the greatest encouragement 1 had in the place [Ettriek] from the time of my settling among them, were [four others] and James Biggar in Upper Dalgleish. .  In July I met with the piercing trial of the death of William Biggar, brother to the said James, who, having gone along with me to the communion at Pcnpont, died there, of which I shall give an account afterward. He was a most kindly, pious, good man, unlike the country [natives of Ettriek], an elder also, and most useful in his office. (Notes from G.W. Shirley)

10.  JAMES3 BIGGAR (WILLIAM2, HERBERT1) of Margolly was born 1640 and died May 1733 in Marglolly, Kirkcudbright, Scotland.  He married LILIAS WHITEHEAD, daughter of JOHN WHITEHEAD of Bonerick.

Notes for JAMES BIGGAR: A Covenanter

On 4th March 1669, he was admitted to the benefit of the Act of Indemnity for those in the Rebellion of 1666. He gave bond that he would not again rise in arms, 5th March 1669 (Reg. Privy Council).

12.  JAMES4 BIGGAR (HARBERT3, HERBERT2, HERBERT1) was born July 25, 1684, in Of Barbouie, and died December 23, 1757.  He married JANET SCOTT May 08, 1708, in Bogrie a Hamlet in Dumfries, and Galloway, daughter of JOHN SCOTT.  She was born in 1690 in Bogrie a Hamlet in Dumfries and Galloway and died in 1754.

 Bond, 24th March 1702; registered, 5th May 1709 (Barbuie Papers). Assignation and disposition of the Lands of Barboy to James Biggar, only lawful son, 1st May 1708, which mentions bond dated 1699, by John Cannan of Barley, later of Headmark (Barbuie Papers)

There is no conformation as of yet that John Biggar (1764) son of Robert Biggar & Janet Milligan 1) is the John Biggar that married Janet Milligan. 2)  is the John who made the Journey to PEI. Father of John Robert Biggar (b.1799) who m. Mary Rogerson. Arrived in PEI, Canada between 1831-32.
